Merry Christmas, Prime Minister.’ The
PM, Michael Smith, glanced up from an official document he was studying; and
saw his attractive, young and desirable secretary, standing in the doorway with
a beaming smile across her face. In his Received Pronunciation accent he spoke
gently but purposefully at the same time, ‘what are you doing here?’ Karen was
perplexed,’ ‘erm, I’m your secretary sir, so when you’re in office I have a
duty to be at your assistance should you need me.’ Michael rose from his chair,
‘it’s Christmas Eve Karen, go home and enjoy the festivities with your family.’
He turned towards the window, and surveyed the area, ‘oh I see, the chancellor
is also working today’ he thought. That meant that only three people were located
inside Downing Street this evening, he sent the rest of his loyal workforce,
including his police guards, home to enjoy the festive season.
‘What about your family, sir?’ Karen enquired. ‘The nation is my family
dear, and the nation needs its Prime Minister, it just doesn’t know it yet.’
Karen left in a joyous mood, she had carried out the role of secretary
to the Chancellor before, and he would have never let her go home until he had
left; so this was a new experience for her. She couldn’t help but notice that
the PM appeared beleaguered.
‘Charles, I see you too, are unable to negotiate the deal…. How do I
know? Because you’re wearing the same clothes as you did yesterday…. You
haven’t slept a wink have you? Well if it’s any consolation neither have I,
it’s time to deploy the army… Yes I know what time of year it is, but this is
the perfect opportunity for them to attack… I have my Christmas greeting speech
in half an hour…. No mention will be made; we have to eradicate the threat
before anybody even gets a sniff off it….. ‘
The PM strolled down the corridor inside
number ten, as he made his way down towards the front door; where the national
media were gathered outside; he stepped onto the makeshift stage before
beginning his speech. ‘This time of the year reminds us about the importance of
solidarity- the importance of our family and friends, and the importance of
remembering how we are the privileged few. It is a time to bury the hatchet
with old foes, to embrace one another, rekindle old flames; and savour
the glory of Jesus Christ’s legacy. We have had a turbulent year my friends, but
we defeated the opposition, and proved that their scandalous policies are
unworkable and insulting to the people of Britain.’
The importance of Christmas- is best summed up by Guy Wetmore, ‘O Christmas Sun! What holy task is
thine! To fold a world in the embrace of God! Did Michael Smith’s speech, end the conflict
between Western Europe and Russia? Sometimes you just need to spread a little
Christmas cheer.
