It was a
Sunday evening in October and in common with many young ladies of her class,
Katherine Hilbery was pouring out tea. Her companion Mildred Chatter, lifted
her cup up for the third time, and Katherine poured with an exasperated look on
her face. “You drink far too much tea Mildred, you must watch your caffeine
intake.” Mildred placed her cup down, and wondered over to the large book
collection, situated to her far right. She started to run her finger along the
spines, and dust began billowing from the book case, Katharine coughed
violently. “What are you looking for Mildred?” Mildred never responded she
continued to search and search, occasionally pulling a book out, just enough to
see the title, before shaking her head and slotting it back in its place.
Then Mildred found what she was looking for.
She pulled out an old photo album, and handed it over to Katharine. “What’s
this.” Mildred sat down next to Katharine, before replying “I’ll tell you the
story that accompanies the photos.”

“I look so
happy, his arms casually droop over my shoulder, my smiles radiant and I
couldn’t be happier. Our last picture together. So many tears have dropped onto
this photograph, my heart can’t heel it never will. You know what happened next
right? I hear the calls, see the texts, read the emails; and he still denied
it, but I knew intuition. So this photo, was our last moment together, in a
strange twist of fate she walked in a few moments after this photo was taken.”
Katherine
rose from her chair, before speaking softly but assertively “I’m not sure where
all this is going.” Mildred smiled, flicked the page over and began recounting
the next story behind the photo.

“Ah my 36th
birthday. You couldn’t make it that day could you? Something to do with a
business trip? What is Hong Kong like in August? So anyway, just as I was to
blow out the candles, with George sitting on my right, my mother on my left; I
see her reflection......
Katherine
started to head towards the exit. Mildred slammed the book shut, hurling the
tea pot towards the door which narrowly missed Katherine’s head. “What did you
do that for you maniac, Katherine bellowed.”
“Sweet Katherine, I know what you did.”
